Four Corners Monument (July 2017)

This morning we had a RV service repairman come to our unit to see what the trouble is with our RV brake system.  After doing a bunch of diagnostic tests, we found out that the Ram has an electric short in it.  So, Scott called over to the Ram dealership here in Cortez to have the truck brought in tomorrow morning for servicing.  I guess it was a good idea that we decided to stay 4 days here in Cortez after all!

The grandkids were excited to go to Four Corners Monument today.  They wanted to be in four places simultaneously.  So, we drove out for them to experience this phenomenon...the only place in the US that you can be in four states at once.  We had a pretty fun drive and the kids were silly and giddy the whole drive.  Scott kept having funny smirks on his face by their antics.  After about 45 minutes we finally crossed into New Mexico and arrived.

From what we remembered, it was $5 per car to enter the monument, but it was actually $5 per person.  For those traveling with RVs (we did this trip in our travel trailer in May), you can bring in your RV and park on the left just as you enter or down lower on the right past the food huts. Also, please drive slowly...the roads are really bumpy and uneven.  FYI.

Four Corners is an interesting place because it's not a US National Landmark, but a Navajo one...it is on the Navajo Reservation and is part of Navajo Parks and Recreation.  We actually passed through the Ute Reservation to get to the Navajo Reservation.

Inside the monument area.
Once inside, the monument is, the marker is in the very center of the monument.  Flags of the 4 reservations and those of the state flags surround the monument.  Around the outskirts of the monument are 4 sections of vendor stalls for Native Americans selling their crafts.

A typical vendor stall.
While I waited in line to get our turn at taking photos, Scott took the kids to the vendors to look around.  Cierra bought the most beautiful 3D dream catcher I've ever seen.  And, Hunter bought a scorpion necklace.
The kids chose well the artifacts from this area.
If you're wanting to come to Four Corners and are handicapped, don't let this stop you from coming. There is wheelchair access here so you can enjoy the entire monument.  The parking lot is a bit rough - it's just clay - but the rest is very well taken care of and tastefully done.  To see more photos of the monument itself, please see my previous post from May 2017 with more details.

Soon it was our turn for photographs at the Monument.  Of course, we did Cierra's obligatory hand stand photo and Hunter got on board this time by laying on his back covering all the states.

After we finished our visit, we went to one of the two food huts for some Navajo Tacos and Fry Bread for lunch.  While waiting for Cierra and Grandpa Scott to bring back the food, Hunter called his dad to tell him he bought the scorpion necklace for his dad.  That was so sweet.  He told his dad it may not fit him though because it nearly only fit him. Such a sweet boy spending his hard earned money on his dad. Ahhh.
Cierra helped Grandpa carry Navajo Tacos to our picnic area.
Yummy Lunch for everyone!
Soon, we found ourselves leaving New Mexico and heading back into Colorado...and then into Utah to go to Hovenweep National Monument.
Back to Colorado...again...
